Correlation

Restless Dance Theatre with Seoul-based dance company Light Sound Friends

Correlation is a new dance work led by Restless Dance Theatre Artistic Director Michelle Ryan together with Light Sound Friends, a Seoul-based dance company with dancers with disability (The founding and hosting organisation of the Korea International Accessible Dance Festival), and K-Music Makers led by composer Professor Sngkn Kim (Seoul National University, the founder and former artistic director of Tongyeong International Music Festival). These exceptional talents were matched together as part of the Connect2Abilities project.

Restless Dance Theatre is an outstanding example of how artists with and without disability can work together and create competitive and high-quality artworks on the international stage. They contest the stereotypes of, and prejudices towards, disability with their innovative and provocative works. By doing so, their success and well-developed collaborative processes nurture the creative voices of artists with disability.

Supported by the Australia-Korea Foundation, ‘Connect2Abilities’ is a project that aims to connect and share stories of success that would help build professional artistic capacity of up-and-coming Korean artists with disability and empower them.

Correlation will enable us to see Restless Dance Theatre leave a lasting legacy beyond Australia.

The talk will be delivered by Michelle Ryan, Artistic Director of Restless, together with Dr Boram Lee and the dancers, as they introduce you to the work of the Company. The session will be facilitated by Dr Maggie Tonkin presented by the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre.

PASSAGE by Jonathan Kim

The third door of the 12 doors

A new exhibition by Jonathan Kim in collaboration with 빛소리친구들 as part of Connect2Abilities

“A doorway may open up momentarily, much like a subway train ride, to an unknown world, to radically
different spaces. We, as an audience, have been invited to a unique staged setting where both parent and child, together, share their emotions concerning the lived experiences of living with disabilities.”

“Jonathan’s task was to visually represent all these complex ideas within a virtual project connected by Australian verisimilitudes, such as found pieces of Australian hardwood to mirror the ancient Korean ‘ironing boards’. It is the leading edge of thought to welcome rhizomic, transdisciplinary collaborations, with inclusiveness of people previously uninvited, working across the oceans, to help solve the wicked problems of daily life.”
